Cowra Day Trip from Orange
Cowra is a town defined by an extraordinary act of reconciliation. Located 110 kilometres south of Orange — about 1 hour 20 minutes by car — it is best known for the Cowra Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre, one of the most beautiful and significant Japanese gardens outside Japan. But Cowra offers more than its headline attraction: a moving war history, its own small wine region, and a riverside setting in the Lachlan Valley that makes for a pleasant change of scenery from Orange’s elevated tablelands.
Getting to Cowra from Orange
Head south from Orange on the Mitchell Highway, turning off toward Cowra via Canowindra or continuing on the Mid-Western Highway. The drive takes approximately 80 minutes through farming country and the village of Canowindra (itself worth a stop — see below). From Yallungah, plan to leave by 9am for a full day.
Top Things to Do in Cowra
Cowra Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre
This is the reason to visit. The five-hectare garden was designed by Ken Nakajima, one of the world’s foremost garden designers, and represents the landscape of Japan in miniature — from the mountains to the sea. It is a stunningly beautiful and meticulously maintained space. The Cultural Centre provides context for the garden’s origins in the Cowra Breakout of 1944, when over 1,000 Japanese prisoners of war attempted to escape from the Cowra POW camp, resulting in the deaths of 231 Japanese and 4 Australian soldiers. The garden was created as an act of reconciliation between the two nations. Entry is approximately $18 for adults. Allow one and a half to two hours.
Cowra POW Camp Site and War Cemetery
The remains of the POW camp are preserved as a heritage site on the edge of town. Interpretive panels explain the layout and the events of the breakout. The Japanese War Cemetery nearby is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is deeply moving — 523 graves in immaculate condition. The Australian War Cemetery is adjacent. These sites are free to visit and essential for understanding the full story behind the Japanese Garden.
Canowindra (En Route)
The village of Canowindra is on the route between Orange and Cowra and is worth a 30-minute stop. The main street is charming, the Canowindra Age of Fishes Museum houses a remarkable collection of 360-million-year-old fish fossils discovered in a local quarry, and there are a couple of good cafés for coffee. Swinging Bridge Wines also has a cellar door here.
Cowra Wine Region
Cowra has its own small wine region, warmer than Orange and known for Chardonnay, Shiraz, and Cabernet. Windowrie Estate is the largest producer and has a cellar door open daily. It is a different style to Orange — riper, more generous — and worth a tasting if you want to understand how elevation changes wine character within a short distance.
Where to Eat in Cowra
The Japanese Garden has a small café serving Japanese-influenced light meals and excellent matcha. In town, the Quarry Restaurant at the Cowra Services Club is the best option for lunch. For something more casual, try the cafés along Kendal Street. Cowra’s dining scene is modest compared to Orange, so plan accordingly — a big breakfast at Yallungah before you leave and dinner back in Orange after you return is a good strategy.
Practical Information
The Japanese Garden is open daily from 8.30am to 5pm (last entry 4pm). The POW camp site and war cemeteries are open at all times. Most shops in Cowra are open standard business hours. Allow a full day for the round trip including stops. The drive is pleasant but there is a lot of ground to cover, so an early start helps. Mobile coverage is good along the main routes and in town.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the drive from Orange to Cowra scenic?
It is pleasant rural driving through farming country and the Lachlan Valley. Not dramatically scenic like a Blue Mountains drive, but relaxed and easy. The route via Canowindra adds interest.
Is Cowra suitable for children?
The Japanese Garden is a peaceful space that older children can appreciate. The Age of Fishes Museum in Canowindra is genuinely exciting for children interested in dinosaurs and fossils. Young children may find the war history sites less engaging.
Can I visit Cowra and Millthorpe in the same day?
Possible but rushed. They are in different directions from Orange. Better to give each its own day for a more relaxed experience.
