Getting to Orange NSW
Orange is one of the most accessible premium wine regions in Australia. From Sydney, you have three clear options: a scenic 3.5-hour drive through the Blue Mountains, a one-hour flight with Rex Airlines, or a relaxing 4-hour train journey. Here is what you need to know about each, plus getting around once you arrive.
Driving from Sydney
The most popular option and the one we recommend for most visitors. The drive from Sydney’s western suburbs to Orange takes approximately 3.5 hours via the M4 Motorway, Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains, and Mitchell Highway through Bathurst.
The route is well-signposted and mostly dual carriageway or good two-lane highway. The Blue Mountains section between Katoomba and Lithgow includes some winding roads but is perfectly manageable. East of Bathurst the road opens up into rolling farmland. Consider stopping in Bathurst for coffee — it breaks the drive at the two-thirds mark.
Tolls apply on the M4 Motorway from Strathfield to Penrith (check current rates). There are no tolls west of Penrith. Fuel is available at regular intervals along the entire route, with major stops at Katoomba, Lithgow, and Bathurst. The road is well-maintained year-round, though fog can occur on the Blue Mountains descent in the early morning during winter.
Driving from Canberra
Orange is approximately 3.5 hours from Canberra, 280 kilometres via the Barton Highway to Yass, then the Lachlan Valley Way through Cowra to Orange. The route is less scenic than the Sydney drive but straightforward. An alternative route via Bathurst takes slightly longer but may suit if you want to visit Bathurst along the way.
Flying to Orange
Rex Airlines operates daily flights from Sydney (Kingsford Smith) to Orange Airport (OAG). Flight time is approximately one hour. Rex uses Saab 340 turboprop aircraft. Orange Airport is located at Spring Hill, approximately 15 kilometres south of the city centre — about 15 minutes by car.
There is no public transport from the airport. You will need a rental car (available at the airport from Hertz and Budget), a pre-booked taxi, or a transfer arranged through your accommodation. Yallungah Boutique Hotel can assist with airport transfer arrangements — contact the hotel directly when booking.
Flying makes most sense for business travellers, time-poor visitors, or anyone combining Orange with a longer Australian itinerary. The main trade-off is that you will still need a car for wine touring once you arrive.
Train to Orange
NSW TrainLink operates daily train services from Sydney Central Station to Orange. Journey time is approximately 4 hours. The service runs via the Blue Mountains, Lithgow, and Bathurst. It is a scenic and relaxing journey, particularly through the Blue Mountains section. Fares vary but are generally $30 to $55 one way for an adult in economy.
Orange Railway Station is centrally located, about 10 minutes’ walk from the main shopping strip and a short taxi ride from Yallungah. The main limitation is that, like flying, you arrive without a car and will need to rent one for cellar door visits or rely on wine tour operators for winery transport.
Getting Around Orange
A car is essential for wine touring. Orange’s 30-plus cellar doors are spread across the region, from 5 minutes to 25 minutes from the town centre. The town of Orange itself is very walkable — Yallungah guests can walk to restaurants, cafés, and shops within 7 to 10 minutes.
If you prefer not to drive to wineries, several wine tour operators provide guided experiences with transport included. Orange Wine Tours and See Wine Food Country both run regular small-group tours that pick up from accommodation. This is a good option if you flew or trained in, or if you simply want to taste without worrying about driving.
Taxis are available but limited. Ride-share services operate intermittently. Do not rely on either for getting between wineries — book a tour or rent a car.
Car Rental
Hertz and Budget have offices at Orange Airport. In-town rental is more limited. If you are flying in, book your rental car in advance — availability can be tight during peak weekends (FOOD Week in March, Wine Festival in October). Standard rates start from approximately $60 to $80 per day for a small sedan.
