Summer is its own season here
Orange sits 862 metres above sea level, and in summer that elevation makes itself felt.
Days are warm and generally dry, while evenings cool as the sun falls behind Mount Canobolas. The light lingers, giving you a little more time for an afternoon among the vines, a long lunch or an evening on the Terrace back at Yallungah.
It is a different expression of summer — one shaped by altitude, orchard country and the changing rhythm of wine country.
You may even want a light layer after sunset.
At the height of harvest
Summer is when the Orange orchards truly come into their own.
Fruit has been grown here since 1838, with apples, cherries and plums among the region’s earliest plantings. For close to 170 years, Orange was mainland Australia’s largest apple-growing district.
Today, orchards still climb the volcanic slopes around Mount Canobolas, where elevation, rich soils and cool nights help create ideal growing conditions.
December brings cherries, followed by peaches, nectarines and plums as summer unfolds — alongside figs and other summer produce appearing on tables and menus across the region.
A bowl of seasonal stone fruit will be waiting in your room on arrival: a simple taste of Orange at one of its most abundant times of year.
Pick your own at Hillside Harvest
For a closer taste of the season, visit Hillside Harvest, a fourth-generation family orchard in nearby Borenore.
Their Pick Your Own experience invites you into the working orchard to gather fruit straight from the trees, with different varieties ripening throughout summer. Smaller groups can simply arrive without a booking, and Hillside recommends allowing around one to two hours to enjoy the orchard. Afterwards, stop by the farm store and café for local produce, a light lunch or coffee.
Back at Yallungah, a seasonal harvest bowl will be waiting in your room — another small taste of summer in Orange.
Discover wine at altitude
Summer is also a beautiful time to explore Orange wine country.
Just beyond town, cellar doors rise further into the hills. See Saw, Rowlee and Printhie all sit on the Nashdale side of Orange at approximately 950 to 1,070 metres above sea level — within around ten minutes of Yallungah.
The bottle awaiting you at Yallungah comes from See Saw, a certified organic producer at Nashdale and the only producer in the region to have planted Glera, the grape traditionally used for Prosecco.
