Orange NSW Emergency Information
Essential emergency contacts and practical safety information for visitors to Orange wine country. Save these numbers in your phone before you arrive.
Emergency Numbers
For all emergencies (police, fire, ambulance): call 000. For non-emergency police assistance: call 131 444. For 24-hour health advice: call Healthdirect on 1800 022 222.
Hospital and Medical
Orange Health Service (Orange Base Hospital) is located on Dalton Street, Orange. It provides 24-hour emergency department services. For non-emergency medical needs, several general practices (GPs) operate in the Orange CBD — some accept walk-in appointments, others require booking. After-hours medical advice is available through Healthdirect.
Pharmacy
Several pharmacies operate in the Orange CBD with standard business hours (typically 8.30am to 5.30pm weekdays, reduced hours Saturday, closed or limited Sunday). Priceline Pharmacy and other chemists are located in the main shopping area.
Police
Orange Police Station is located on Byng Street. For emergencies always call 000. For non-urgent matters call 131 444 or visit the station during business hours.
Fire and Bushfire
In a fire emergency, call 000 immediately. During bushfire season (typically November to March), check the NSW Rural Fire Service website (fires.nsw.gov.au) for current alerts, total fire ban declarations, and fire danger ratings before travelling to rural areas or cellar doors. The RFS app provides real-time alerts.
Roadside Assistance
NRMA roadside assistance: 13 11 22. RACV, RAA, and other state motoring organisations have reciprocal coverage in NSW.
Veterinary Emergency
Orange has several veterinary clinics open during business hours. After-hours emergency veterinary care is available — save the contact number of the local emergency vet before travelling if bringing a pet.
General Safety Tips
Orange is a safe, friendly regional city. Standard precautions apply. When driving to cellar doors, watch for wildlife on rural roads particularly at dawn and dusk — kangaroos and wombats are common. Check weather conditions before driving to Mount Canobolas in winter (frost and occasional ice on the summit road). Stay on marked walking trails in the conservation area. Carry water and sun protection when walking, especially in summer. Be aware of snake risk in rural areas during warmer months — stick to paths and wear closed shoes.
